More information about this year’s event:

On September 28th Councilwoman Nury Martinez presents the second annual Van Nuys Arts Festival, #VNAF2018. This festival began in 2017 under the direction of Martinez who conceived of the event as “a place to showcase the incredible talents and skills of local residents, who are contributing to the Valley’s rich culture”. VNAF 2018 envisions the Van Nuys Civic Center as an outdoor virtual forest where visitors experience the Van Nuys Civic Center in exciting new ways. Participants are invited to experience interactive art installations, live music at the main stage, a 3D dance party, and celebrate the talents of local Van Nuys High School students at their own pace. The event is a celebration of the creative arts in Van Nuys and our amazing community partners and vendors who joined together to showcase the talents of this diverse community. Make a night of it and enjoy refreshments from the numerous food trucks and craft brewers on hand to round out the night. This program is supported by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and produced by Dyson & Womack.

VNAF is delighted to partner with a number of institutions, including The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) which will offer live art-making workshops and a 3D Instagram photo booth. This booth serves as a satellite of their current exhibition, 3D Double Vision, which showcases the history of 3D vision from the 1830’s up to present day. Discovery Cube’s footprint workshop is a fun and educational pop-up for our younger audiences. “Animal Tracks” highlights local animal footprints as participants create animal track stamps and track boots.

Event goers will encounter an eclectic variety of artists, performances, and installations throughout the virtual forest. 818 Arts will light up the night with a live project mapping by the artist Spencer Sterling. Acclaimed artist Christine Marie, will be hosting a 3D dance party where visitors will be invited to wear 3D glasses to participate. G818er’s will host a drawing slam that tests participants illustration skills and knowledge of forest creatures.

VNAF 2018 will also play host to a wide variety of talented musicians. Start your night with East LA’s own Los Cambalache as they bring their contemporary take on traditional Son Jarocho music from Veracruz, Mexico. NOVALA bring a high energy with their West African and Latino rhythms. The evening is headlined by the socially conscious Hip Hop of Maya Jupiter who music create a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere to the stage. Lesser Pieces bring us into the night with their light vocals and electronic music.

In addition to the main stage, we will host a range of local DJs and musical performances by the students at CHAMPS Charter School and Van Nuys High School at our side stage.
